After England took charge of New Amsterdam in 1664, all former slaves that were given the half-slave status were set free. They also had their original land grants finalized and all grants were officially marked as being owned by them. Freedom as well as land grants were given to the male and female who were given freedom. About 40 slaves received their freedom prior to the English take over.
