In early medieval painting, the traditional themes of Greek and Roman art were replaced by paintings that focused largely on Religious paintings on a Christian theme. Most Medieval artworks still served a primarily religious function which means that the most important was the continued domination of Christian art, as as it had done since early Christian times.

Religious subjects, such as stories from the Bible (both the Old and the New Testaments). One of the most frequent subjects was Virgin Mary with the infant Christ, as well as the evangelists (mostly Matthew). Also, there were many paintings and frescoes of saints in catacombs, some of which are preserved to this day (the most notable are in Rome). Religious themes would be the main obsession until the end of the medieval era.
