I believe the answer would be: the audience would either react positively or negatively, never in between.

The experimental theater is a form of avant-garde theater which uses new way of representing the theme and characters through different use of language and the body to change the audience’s perception and to create a new, more active relation. The main theme of experimental theater is the absurdity of modern time - the theme which may be relevant nowadays.

But, the audiences today might react to performances of experimental theater, or theater of the absurd, either positively and delighted by the performance if it is according to their sensibility and taste, or negatively if it doesn’t. Apart from the sensibility of the person, the reaction is mostly influenced by the quality of the performance and the successfulness of conveying the theme. This is the main difference between the popularity of Alfred Jerry and Beckett.
