His mother gave him sight by giving birth to him. He was blind to the truth in his relationship with his wife, Jocasta. After learning the truth, that Jocasta is actually his mother, he takes the golden brooches from her gown and blinds himself. It goes full circle; his mother gives him sight and takes it in the end.
