    The dead hummingbird which hangs around her neck is considered a good luck charm for falling in love in Mexican folklore. An alternative interpretation is that the hummingbird pendant is a symbol of Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god of war.

    On the stone, which marks the border between the United States and Mexico, it was engraved "Carmen Rivera painted her portrait in 1932." She used her Christian first name and her husband's last name. It's an indication that she feels she always pretends to be proper with her slightly incorrect English.
