At 13, Dmitri Shostakovich was already considered a great promise by the new Russian government regime, which at the time sought new trends. During the period of the Russian Revolution in 1917, Shostakovich was 11 years old. Therefore, his life and musical evolution are strongly associated with the social and political changes of this era. In the 1930s, however, after Lenin's death and Stalin's seizure of power, the new vanguards were no longer welcomed, and many artists began to be censored, persecuted or marginalized.
