During interpretation, the art historian focuses on putting into language the meaning of the artwork. In order to articulate the meaning, the art historian takes into consideration the following aspects of the artwork: form, medium, context, and subject matter. The viewer's or art historian's emotional response to the work also contributes to the formation of meaning as these feelings act as directional indicators. The existence of varying interpretations are also important to the overall interpretation which self-corrects itself through individual and communal means.
