Sly and the family stone, not only introduced "slap bass" playing to funk music, but also created their own version of love ballads that relied heavily on the overall bass sound. in the song "if you want me to stay" instead of using a soft, slow endearing feel, the band uses a funky groove. but, rather than the drums, do they use the bass to drive the band?

I don't think they use bass to drive the band every instrument has a key roll in playing music and in some songs/bands certain instruments are more present but still rely on the other instruments
