In architecture, a coffer, also known as caisson or lacunar, is a series of decorative sunken panels located in a ceiling or a dome. Some of the earliest coffers were made by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, who made stone coffers in their Propylaea (the monumental gateways to their temples), later on, these ornamental panels also became common in the Baroque and Neoclassical architecture.
