I think the intellectuals and artists served as targets for the red guards because they are mostly initiators of change and a source of different progressive or counter-ideological thinking on government systems. In history, intellectuals and artists played a revolutionary part of presenting divergence that presented different thoughts of truths. They have talents, skills, and knowledge on influencing people with other perspectives.
