The answer is human actions and emotions. Their characters were people who had many dimensions. They were not perfect but the writers were able to show different sides to them. Rather than be black and white, there are several grey areas in each character. They show both their flaws as well as their virtues. Whether it is the hero, the villain or just a minor character, they are portrayed in such a way that they rise above who they are.
