Sociologists believe that having a shared culture is what separates humans from other animals.

The statement is quite true, and is one of the things that certainly separates man from the lesser beasts. That we can share, via language, the internal workings of our minds with others, and imagine what others might be feeling, is the key component enabling shared culture, which in turn enables us to undertake great works, cultural and otherwise.
