You have learned that genes carry inherited traits. Genes are found on chromosomes. Scientists can analyze an individual's chromosomes using a karyotype. A karyotype is an organized arrangement of all the chromosomes in a cell. In a karyotype, chromosomes are stained with a special dye and magnified 1,000 times with a microscope. The dye creates a unique banding pattern. The chromosomes are paired, arranged by size (largest to smallest), and numbered from 1 to 23. Scientists use shape, size, number, and banding to analyze the genetic profile of an individual. For this project, you will create and analyze a karyotype.
