It is said that upwelling happens in the open oceans and along coastlines. Upwelling is a process wherein winds blowing across the ocean surface push the water away and the water beneath the surface goes up to replace the pushed water.

The water that upwells is colder in temperature and has richer nutrient content which results to a high biological productivity of the surface waters.

Kelp forests are abundant in areas where upwelling occurs.
