Why did zookeepers have such trouble keeping koala bears alive when other animals from Australia were thriving in zoos? Unlike most Australian animals, koala bears require moderate temperatures to thrive. Zookeepers weren't feeding koalas the kind of food they require. Koala bears are susceptible to viral infections.

Zookeepers have a difficulty of keeping koala bears alive because Koala bears are susceptible to viral infections. There is a virus that is present to Koalas which is called the Koala retrovirus. Koala retrovirus makes a Koala bear more susceptible to infections and even cancer.
