Informed consent is full disclosure of all risks related to patient treatment. A nurse should try at all costs to follow informed consent guidelines to protect herself and the health care provider. However, a nurse has an obligation to do what is best for the patient in the event consent is not able to be given. In this situation, when the patient is unable to provide consent, it is the duty of the nurse to do what would reasonably be in the best interest of the patient.
