Sarcomeres. A sarcomere is the functional unit (contractile unit) of a muscle fiber. As illustrated each sarcomere contains two types of myofilaments: thick filaments, composed primarily of the contractile protein myosin, and thin filaments, composed primarily of the contractile protein actin.
