Parenchyma cells are the most common cells in plants and depending on the species of the plant, they vary in function, role and shape. In some plant species, parenchyma cells are specialized to participate in photosynthesis. In that case, they contain a large number of chloroplasts, which is the organelle responsible for the process of photosynthesis. Another important role of these cells is the storage of starch. They are suitable for this role because they have large intercellular space and specialized structures called amyloplasts.
