Nitrazine paper will turn blue on contact with alkaline substances such as amniotic fluid. The amniotic fluid will be released if the woman is in labor.

Normal vaginal discharge and urine are acidic and the paper will turn pink.

If the nurse determines that the membranes have ruptured, that means the Nitrazine paper turned blue.
