Opium has historically, since 5000BCE, been used as a pain reliever especially during gruesome surgical procedures such as limb amputations that were crudely done. Opium was used as an analgesic due to its alkaloid morphine content from which opioids are derived. In current medicine, the opioids can be synthesized and rendered without the harmful effects of the heroine in the opium.
