Magnesium sulfate is a mineral that causes an increase in the level of magnesium in the body and an increase of the water in the intestines. Some people use it in the form of Epsom salt, as a bath soak, while others take it orally to relieve symptoms of constipation. Intravenous administration of magnesium sulfate is mainly used for the treatment of eclampsia in pregnant women with severe pre-eclampsia. Before administering magnesium sulfate, the nurse should examine the urinary output of the patient in order to assess the healthy functioning of the kidneys. As this substance is excreted by the kidneys, problems with the renal function can cause toxicity and further kidney damage.
