Photosynthesis happens in plants because they have chlorophyll which also makes them green. Chlorophyll captures energy from the sun and uses it to make sugars out of carbon dioxide from the air and water. The sugars fuel the plant's roots, stems, and leaves so the plant can grow.

    Respiration - C6H12O6 + 6O2 - - > 6CO2 + 6H2O

    Photosynthesis - 6CO2 + 6H2O - - > C6H12O6 + 6O2
