    A family history of bipolar disorder has ten-fold higher risk for developing the disorder by a genetic factor as compared to the general population. Bipolar disorder causes depression and elevated moods. Genetic influences are believe to account for 70 percent of the risk of developing the disorder showing strong hereditary component. In addition, many chromosomal regions and candidate genes are related to the susceptibility with each gene exert an effect.
