Why do concert halls often have drapes or other soft material on the walls?

Concert halls have drapes or other materials on the walls because if you let the instruments and sounds just bounce off the walls you would get echos and other sounds that aren't pleasing to the ears. The drapery absorbs that noise so your ear drums just hear the instruments.
