    Trophic level

A trophic level is made up of organisms that have the same role in a food chain and the same relationship to a primary source of energy. This is better outlined in the following example:

Consider a group of herbivores such as rabbits, squirrels and deer which all consume the plants present in their habitat. They make up the first trophic level.

Next, the organisms that consume these animals, such as bobcats, owls and eagles all occupy the same trophic level (the second) because they have the same relationship with the energy source, which was the first trophic level.
