Why did mendel choose to work with the garden pea plant?

Gregor Mendel chose the garden pea plant for his heredity experiments due to its ability to easily produce progenies. Garden pea plants also have many distinct varieties that would allow Mendel to replicate his experiments thus allowing him to confirm the initial experimental results.
