If the membrane becomes two layers of stratified squamous epithelium then the rate of oxygen/carbon dioxide diffusion will be lower.

Stratified squamous epithelium is good for protection since it is thick and durable A thicker membrane will make the diffusion slower because the distance will be higher. This will lessen the effectivity of the respiratory organ as it will produce less oxygen. That is why respiratory membrane is best if it is thin.
