a undifferentiated (the potential to become any kind of cell) cell that gives rise to many different kinds of cells

o They are unspecialized cells capable of dividing thru cell division

o Under certain physiologic or experimental conditions, they can be induced to become tissue or organ specific cells with functions

o 4 types of stem cells, based on where they came from

    • adult

    • umbilical cord/placental

    • embryonic

    • induced pluripotent - a cell that was an adult stem cell that tried to go back to an embryonic cell, we give it a virus gene/chemicals to make it go backwards.
