The skin is composed of two basic layers, epidermis and dermis layer. The epidermis cells are made up of keratin. Keratin is a fibrous protein which gives hardness and water resistance properties to the skin. It also prevents water loss and entry of germs by forming protective layers on the surface of the skin.
