DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) carries genetic information and instructions required for the growth and development, functioning among other processes in living organisms. In a nutshell DNA carries hereditary material that is passed by organisms to their off springs. The structure of DNA is a double helix, that consists of bases (adenine, thyamine, cytosine and guanine) and a sugar phosphate backbone. DNA stores the genetic information which is copied during replication any time a new cell is formed. Replication therefore is the process where DNA copies itself during cell division so as to ensure that the cell formed has the same DNA or the same genetic information as the parent cell.
