Plasmids can be used to incorporate a desired gene into something else which is lacking the gene. An example would be that you could take a plasmid from a bacteria which is resistant to an antibiotic and put it into a bacteria which is not resistant to the antibiotic. Therefore, the insertion of the plasmid would make the susceptible bacteria resistant.
