Chromosomes are structures that contain packaged DNA molecules where DNA molecules are tightly packaged around proteins (histone proteins). Chromosome number is very important in determining the genetic make up of an organism. A cell may have either haploid (n) or diploid (2n) number of chromosomes. The chromosomes number is determined based on the process of cell division undergone by the cell (that is either mitotic or meiotic division). The number of chromosomes plays crucial part in heredity as it ensures inheritance of valuable traits by the off springs from the parents and also enhances genetic variation among off springs.
