The manufacture and folding of proteins occur in the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The proteins are manufactured in the ribosomes and folded in the cisternae of the RER. Chaperones in the cisternae of the RER ensure proper folding of proteins before they are transported to their destination by the golgi apparatus.

Smooth ER are involved in processing of lipids.
