What makes the nerve cells unique are the two types of extensions, the longer ones, axons and the short ones, dendrites.

Both of these types of cell extensions are key to a unique property of the nerve cell, the ability to send and receive information via electric impulses.

These extensions branch out of the cell and connect it to other nerve cells, or in some cases muscle cells in order to communicate.
