The coat of viruses is called capsid and it is a protein coat which surrounds and protects the genetic material. Sometimes this coat is enveloped in another coat which consists of lipids (fats) and protects capsid. Capsid, together with genetic material and lipid coat forms virion (a form of independent viral particles).
