What mineral deposit is the reason parts of micronesia have had jungle cover removed?

On Guam at least phosphate from guano was mined and would most likely requiring clearing of jungle for access and also it had manganese deposits and bentonite which if eventually mined would most likely require jungle clearing as well, at least locally.
