A photon of light is absorbed by a chlorophyll molecule. The photon increases the energy of an electron in the chlorophyll molecule, so the electron is boosted to a higher orbital. This excited state results in a redox reaction, in which the electron moves from the chlorophyll molecule to an electron acceptor, reducing it. The electron acceptor can be various different molecules such as chlorophyll A0.
