The position of the earth, moon and sun affects the tides in the following ways : when the sun, moon and earth fall in a straight line the solar tide has an additive effect on the lunar tide leading to extra high tides and very low tides (spring tides)

When the sun and the moon are at right to each other, the solar tides partially cancels out the lunar tide and produces neap tide.
