    Connective tissues such as fibrous tissue, areolar tissue, bone, and cartilage, etc. are relatively avascular and they depend on nutrients by diffusion from cell to cell. Since there is an overlying epithelium in connective tissues but also not supplied directly by blood vessels, then the epithelium should also rely on diffusion of nutrients.
