Why are wetlands important to the health of the overall environment?

Wetlands are the "buffer zone" that collects sediment from the local area and prevents it from being washed off into the continental shelf. More land can house more organisms that contribute to the biome. This can be in the form of resources such as ducks for hunting, birds for tourists, and potential crops that can be harvest from these rich lands.
