Red blood cells placed in pure water will swell and burst. what process is causing this to happen

    Water diffuses (from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration) across a semipermeable plasma membrane. The lower water content within the cell means that it is hypotonic and will accept water until it reaches equilibrium or bursts as the case may be (lysis).
