The serotoninergic nuclei of the diffuse modulatory system have a role in pain an locomotion. Specifically, the Magnus raphe nucleus is a part of the motor system in the brain and has a role in mediating pain.

Together with the cerebellum, it has a role in regulating movement and its connection to the spinal cord enables it to inhibit pain.
