The appropriate answer is as a bicarbonate ions in the plasma. Carbon dioxide is transported in the blood from the tissues to the lungs in three different ways. some of it is transported dissolved in the plasma, some is transported as carbaminohemoglobin and other as bound to proteins. However most carbon dioxide is transported as bicarbonate; as blood flows through the tissues, carbon dioxide diffuses into red blood cells, where it is converted into bicarbonate.
