Despite the term, marine snow is actually small organic matter from dead animals, phytoplankton, fecal matter, etc. that goes from the upper layers to the deeper water layers. According to the study of Taylor et. al in 2016 titled "Plastic microfibre ingestion by deep-sea organisms", only the zooplankton and the crustaceans such as lobsters gain energy from the marine snow. Sponges and rays are not in any way mentioned.
