Everything that works needs some energy for it to work, regardless whether it's a person or a machine. If we take poorly refined fuel for example, the fuel that was used 50 years ago, it was not being used to its full potential. This means that larger amounts of fuel were necessary in order to get the same result, compared to today's car fuel. Because the fuel got refined, more energy could be provided from a smaller amount of fuel. This means that by making energy efficiency better, you preserve the resource more. The amount of fuel necessary to run early cars could now be used to power up numerous cars hypothetically.
