Classify each of the characteristics below as pertaining to gene regulation in either prokaryotes or eukaryotes.

    Prokaryotic gene regulation

    Transcription and translation occurs in the cytoplasm

    Genes are located on one chromosome

    some genes are organised into operons and mRNA transcripts often specify more than one protein

    Eukaryotic gene regulation

    Transcription occurs in the nucleus where as translation occurs in the cytoplasm

    A 5' cap and 3' poly tails are added to mRNA (post transciptional modification)

    mRNA transcripts typically specify one protein (ie they are monocistronic in nature), where as prokaryotic mRNA are polycistronic
