One of the major problems with Freud's psychoanalytic theory or its variations is that it lacks any empirical evidence. Freud was considered to be too advanced for his time and whether or not his theories hold true, many considered them to not be reliable because of the lack of evidence that he was able to produce in supporting his claims. In addition, not many people would argue his claims at the time and simply adopted them as the truth.
