    - they are composed of linear, double stranded DNA.

    - they contain their own origin of replication.

    - they typically become integrated into the host genome.

    - they can lead to horizontal gene transfer via conjugation. Usually bacteria are very capable of transfer by conjugation.

    - different types of plasmids have variable copy number. there are low copy and high copy types of plasmids.

    - they contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria. There are studies that shows regarding to this matter.
