The allosteric regulators that are responsible for the reciprocal regulation of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis are the hormones. Hormones change the rate of transcription which effects the gene expression. This allows for one pathway to be open for glycolysis while the one for gluconeogenesis stays closed, and vice versa. They also regulate the degradation of mRNA.
