Axons are long projections of a neuron which conduct electrical impulses known as action potential away from the nerve cell body.

Axons do not make up majority of the matter in a nerve because the length of axon branches are different from one neuron to another. They differ in length from about 0.1 micrometers to 2meters and many neurons do not have axons.
